This Is Our Story

Family. Community. Growth.

As word of mouth grew, so did our little family-run business.

The best quality, the best products, at a fair price. That continues to be our formula as we grow and expand into new communities with new products and ways to save, like our U-Drive Plus rewards program.

    1938

The Vision for United Dairy Farmers Begins

In 1938, Carl H. Lindner Sr. revolutionized the dairy industry in Norwood, Ohio. At a time when milk was primarily home-delivered and paid for weekly or monthly, Lindner introduced a groundbreaking concept: selling milk and dairy products on a cash-and-carry basis directly from his own store. By eliminating delivery costs and credit extensions, he was able to offer customers high-quality dairy products at significantly lower prices than traditional home delivery services. This innovative approach laid the foundation for a new era in dairy retail.

1940s & 1950s: United Dairy Farmers Opens Its First Store & Expands

On May 8, 1940, the Lindner family (Carl Sr., his wife—Clara, and their children—Carl Jr., Robert, Richard and Dorothy) launched United Dairy Farmers at 3955 Main Avenue (now Montgomery Road) with a 20-by-50-foot store and an adjoining dairy plant. This innovative cash-and-carry concept offered milk in gallon and half-gallon bottles—something unheard of at the time—and kept extended hours, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week, for maximum convenience. At just 28 cents per gallon, customers saved up to 24 cents compared to home delivery, and could also purchase butter, cottage cheese, eggs, and buttermilk at low prices. First-day receipts totaled $8, marking the beginning of a family tradition that would grow into an Ohio favorite.

1960s & 1970s: Expands Beyond Dairy to Become a Convenience Retailer

By 1960, United Dairy Farmers owned and operated about 30 stores across the Cincinnati area, evolving from a dairy-focused retailer into a versatile convenience grocery destination. Many UDF locations introduced expanded product lines, including fresh bread, cookies, lunch meats, and cheeses, complementing the brand’s signature dairy offerings. This strategic growth positioned UDF as a family-owned business committed to convenience and quality for local customers.

    1980

    1980s & 1990s: New Generation & Ice Cream Innovation

In the early 1980s, the second generation of the Robert Lindner family—Bob Jr., Jeff, Brad, and David—joined the United Dairy Farmers (UDF) management team, bringing fresh ideas and energy to the business. Their vision for growth focused on one key area: premium ice cream. Recognizing the potential for innovation, Jeff and Brad Lindner introduced Homemade Brand premium ice cream in 1982. This new line featured indulgent flavors crafted with high-quality ingredients and exotic mix-ins, setting a new standard for premium ice cream in Ohio and beyond. The launch strengthened UDF’s reputation for creativity and quality.

    2000s & 2010s: Operational Innovation & Loyalty Expansion

In the 2000s, United Dairy Farmers launched the U-Drive Loyalty Program, offering guests fuel discounts and rewards that quickly became a key driver of repeat visits. UDF expanded with new fueling stations, remodeled stores, and invested in upgraded fuel technology, ice cream production enhancements, and modern store design to support growing demand for convenient, one-stop shopping.

    2020s: New Era Of UDF

United Dairy Farmers advanced as a leader in ice cream, dairy, and convenience stores. In 2019, UDF invested $11 million in a bakery located in Blue Ash to produce proprietary donuts and expand fresh food offerings. UDF modernized its U‑Drive loyalty program, and earned national acclaim via Newsweek’s “Best Loyalty Programs 2023.” In 2025, Michael Ahmed became UDF’s first non-family CEO, ending an 85-year Lindner family dynasty, while the family remains involved through the board, continuing the brand’s focus on quality and customer experience.
