
In 1958 a major plant expansion was complete, equipping the plant with two continuous ice cream freezers, half-gallon and pint ice cream fillers, a half-gallon milk bottle filler, a bottle washer and 12 stainless steel milk holding tanks adjacent to a new receiving dock. The chain now was composed of 22 stores.
Also at this time the family's interest in banking led to the formation of American Financial Corporation (AFC) followed by the acquisition of the Thriftway grocery chain. Dorothy, whose husband was a restaurant-owner, applied her management skills at that business, leaving management of these companies to her three brothers.
By 1960 United Dairy Farmers owned and operated some 30 stores in and around Cincinnati, many of which now carry expanded product lines of bread, cookies, lunch meat and cheeses to complement the selection of fresh dairy products.
